MAXI-ZONE HIGH TEMPERATURE INSERTION HEATERS
Designed
for hot press metal forming applications, the Maxi-Zone High Temperature
Insertion Heater produces continuous sheath temperatures to 2000
F/1095
C. An Inconel® 600 sheath allows efficient operation at extreme
temperatures. Because of this capability, many applications will
observe considerable performance improvements with the Maxi-Zone
versus other heat sources.
A unique feature of the Maxi-Zone is to provide
two or three independently controllable areas along the sheath length.
Precise temperatures can be produced in every location by arranging
the process in multiple zones and monitoring and controlling each
separately.
The Maxi-Zone's primary heat transfer method
is by radiation. The continuing oxidation of the sheath and inside
walls of the hole at these temperatures produce excellent transfer
of heat. This emissivity improves with usage, allowing sheath and
process temperatures to be nearly identical. Diameters are substantially
undersized versus standard cartridge heater applications. A .935"
diameter Maxi-Zone would be applied in a 1" or larger hole.
A Maxi-Zone is easily removed and replaced. Standard Maxi-Zone diameters
are .495", .685" and .935" with lengths from 18 inches
to 15 feet. .210" diameter Inconel® 600 sheath tubular heaters
are available for heating ceramic presses in similar applications.

The
diagram illustrates a nine zone platen with six, three zone Maxi-Zone
Insertion Heaters. Each zone can be sensed and controlled individually.
A platen with 6 elements can be designed with 6 zones utilizing a
Maxi-Zone with 2 independent zones. For even more precise control,
the platen can be comprised of even more zones, depending upon what's
practical.

Watt
Density
To determine watt density, cold areas need be subtracted from the
Sheath Length to determine the Effective Heated Length. A 1"
cold area exists at the bottom end of the Maxi-Zone, and a 1"
cold area is necessary between zones. The cold area required at the
termination area depends upon the ambient temperature. The minimum
cold area is generally 18% of the entire heated length and is increased
as the ambient temperature increases. Consult Ogden for design assistance
based upon application requirements.
